Varsity I Coaches

Bill Slater

Varsity I Head Coach

Coach Slater has longtime ties to the Washington, D.C. high school hockey community and Gonzaga. He grew up playing ice hockey in New England, and has coached youth hockey teams for more than 25 years, including five years at Georgetown Prep, various levels in the Montgomery Youth Hockey Association, and Team Maryland. His teams have won the CBHL Maryland State Championship and three separate teams have reached the USA Hockey National Championship tournament.

Coach Slater has a firsthand understanding of the Gonzaga hockey community and the winning ways of Gonzaga hockey. His sons Jack Slater (‘13) and Ridge Slater (‘15) both attended Gonzaga and together have won four MAPHL championships and two Purple Puck championships. Last season Slater led the AA and A MAPHL teams to championship victories. Gonzaga was the first school to have both division teams achieve this accomplishment during the same season.

This is Coach Slater’s fourth year as Head Coach and Director of the Gonzaga Eagles’ program.




Reed Deckard ('04)

Varsity I Assistant Coach

A 2004 graduate of Gonzaga College High School, Deckard played four years of hockey for the Eagles and was the assistant captain his senior year. Deckard also played four years of club hockey at Denison University (Ohio), captaining the squad in his senior season and earning a degree in Spanish. Deckard is in his seventh season as Assistant Coach for both V1 and V2.


Bill Harris

Varsity I Assistant Coach

Coach Harris moved to the area after receiving an assignment to Andrews Air Force Base. He played for Weymouth High School (‘08), captaining the team his senior year. At Weymouth, he earned Bay State League Honors, and Most Valuable Forward awards. The Weymouth Wildcat Weight Room inducted Harris into its Hall of Fame in 2008. Harris went on to play at Stonehill College (‘12), earning Rookie of the Year, and numerous NE-10 honors.

Following his college career, Harris won four Has Been Hockey League Championships. Harris majored in Healthcare Administration and minored in Public Administration prior to commissioning in the U.S. Air Force Medical Service Corps.  This is Coach Harris’ fourth year coaching at Gonzaga.

Ford Lands ('10)

Varsity I and II Assistant Coach

Coach Lands was born and raised in the Washington DC area and began playing hockey when he was 5 years old. A 2010 graduate of Gonzaga College High School, Lands played four years of hockey for the Eagles and was Captain of Gonzaga's WCAC Championship team his senior year. Lands also played for the Washington Jr. Capitals. He graduated from Plymouth State University in New Hampshire with a degree in biology. Lands began coaching at Gonzaga in 2014. 

Ryan Holley ('07)

Varsity I Assistant Coach

Ryan Holley, class of 07’ played four years of varsity hockey for Gonzaga and was captain his junior and senior year. During his time on Eye Street, Ryan accrued three consecutive MSHL championships, two 1st Team All-Met appearances and one Purple Puck championship. Ryan, a native of the Washington, D.C. area, grew up playing locally for the Washington Little Capitals and the Washington Junior Nationals.  He went on to attend St. Anselm College and play hockey for four years at the NCAA DIII level. Ryan was a two year captain and a three time NE-10 Champion while playing for St Anselm College.

In his first year as Assistant Coach for the Eagles, Ryan is extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity to get involved with Gonzaga hockey which provided him with so many great memories wearing the Purple and White.


Andrew Panzarella

Varsity I Assistant Coach

Coach Panzarella played three seasons at Gonzaga (2006-2008) before leaving to play junior hockey in the United States Hockey League (USHL). While at Gonzaga, he played on teams that won three consecutive championships, including the program’s first title.

After Gonzaga, Panzarella played four seasons in the USHL, with stints in Des Moines, Tri-City, and Waterloo. He went on to play four years at the University of North Dakota, where the Fighting Sioux won two regular season championships and appeared in four consecutive NCAA tournaments, including two trips to the Frozen Four.

Following his collegiate career, Panzarella played two years of professional hockey, skating in the American Hockey League and the East Coast Hockey League.

Jack Slater ('13)

Varsity I Assistant Coach

Coach Jack Slater, a 2013 graduate of Gonzaga, grew up in the Washington, D.C., area and was a member of the Eagles' 2010 and 2013 MAPHL championship teams. Jack was named Washington Post 2nd Team All-Met in his junior season and as captain earned All-Met Player of the Year honors as a senior.

Jack graduated in 2017 from Miami University of Ohio with a major in Political Science. He has been accepted to attend Marine Officer Candidate School next June. This is Jack’s first season as a coach for Gonzaga, and he looks forward to continuing the proud hockey tradition on Eye Street.

Michael Willis

Coach Willis is a 2006 graduate of Bishop O’Connell High School, where he played four years of varsity hockey and two years of lacrosse. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 2011, playing three seasons of club hockey. His Tri-City Eagles Midget team went to Regionals twice and his Bantam Washington Little Caps team went to the USA Nationals. His father coached hockey for more than ten years.

Coach Willis served as the V2 Head Coach for five seasons. Under his leadership the V2 team won both the Purple Puck and MAPHL championships during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. Coach Willis joined the V1 coaching staff this season.
